Lesson 2 : Introduction to e-Learning

E-Learning is basically an abbreviation of electronic learning. In simple words, it can be quoted as the delivery of learning and training through digital devices such as computers, tablets and even cellular phones that are connected to the Internet. This makes it easy for users to learn anytime and from anywhere without any restrictions. Let’s watch a video to learn more about E-Learning.

Content for Video:

  1. What is E-Learning?
  2. Types of E-Learning
  3. VU Methodology
  4. Pre-requisites for E-Learning
  5. Benefits of E-Learning
  6. E-Learning Software/tools

  1. What is E-Learning?

  • Gartner defines e-Learning as "The use of technology for learning in or outside of a classroom."
  • E-learning is also defined as providing Training and development to the Students/Employees through various electronic media such as the Internet, audio, and video etc.

  1. Types of E-Learning

E-Learning typically falls into two categories: Asynchronous and Synchronous

1. Asynchronous E-Learning:

  • This kind of E-Learning does not require instructors and students to be online simultaneously.
  • Students learning through this mode use reading material available online or attend:
    • Pre-recorded audio/ video lectures available on Internet.
    • Lectures available in the form of CDs/DVDs.
    • Video lectures available/ broadcasted through TV Channels.
  • Besides, students use Learning management system, discussion forums, message boards, emails and other related resources /platforms.

2. Synchronous e-Learning:

  • It happens in real-time, meaning learners and instructors are online at the same time.
  • In this type of E-Learning, lessons are delivered in a virtual classroom, and students use live chat, video conferencing, and application sharing to participate in the course.

  1. E-Learning Mode in VU:

  • VU has adopted hybrid approach (i.e., combination of both Asynchronous and Synchronous).
  • Through VU-LMS, using asynchronous mode, students can watch video lectures and submit assignments etc. at any time during specific time period.
  • VU also conducts online sessions (i.e., synchronous mode), where students can have live chat with their instructors and discuss course related issues and get guidelines.

  1. Pre-requisites for E-Learning:

  • As discussed earlier, E-learning is delivered through digital devices. Therefore, learners are required to have some latest gadgets according to their educational needs.
  • At VU, all the basic gadgets / pre-requisites of E-Learning such as Computer Systems, Internet and required services for the studies are available in the VU campuses. All those students who get admission as “a campus-based student” can use such facilities in their respective campuses during the office hours.
  •  However, all other students i.e. who get admission as “home based student” or as "Overseas", have to arrange their Computer/Laptop/Smart mobile phone and proper Internet connection at their own.

  1. Benefits of E-learning:

E-Learning has so many benefits; some of them are given below.

1. Saves Time and Money:

  • You can manage your schedule and take online courses at your most convenient time.
  • You save money too, because you don’t have to pay for transportation or worry about eating on the go.

2. Better Retention:

  • E-Learning makes use of different platforms like Pedagogue, which provides interactive content.
  • You can share your thoughts and opinions with others easily.

3. Personalized Learning:

  • You can choose your learning path and study at your own pace.
  • You can become more motivated in the course.

4. Cost-effective:

  • Many educational institutions save money through this set-up because there is no need to use a physical classroom, which translates to reduce monetary spending.

5. Environment-friendly:

  • E-Learning is also more environmentally friendly because it doesn’t contribute to the pollution brought about by paper production.

  1. E-Learning Software/tools

Here’s a list of some tools that can develop E-Learning modules and online training platforms very easy and convenient to use.

1. Moodle:

  • It is designed to provide educators, administrators, and learners with an open, robust, secure and free platform to create and deliver personalized learning environments.

2. Google Class Room:

  • Strong collaborative focus, easy to set up classes and assignments, virtual classes with Google Meet.

3. Seesaw:

  • It creates a powerful learning loop between teachers, students, and parents.

4. Safe Exam Browser (SEB):

  • It turns any computer temporarily into a secure workstation.
  • It controls access to resources like system functions, other websites and applications and prevents unauthorized resources being used during an exam.

5. VU-LMS:

  • Virtual University-Learning Management System (VU-LMS) is a comprehensive software platform that plays a critical role in the VU mode of study.
  • By using this platform, VU students can:
    • Post their course related queries which are replied within 24-Hours.
    • See lesson contents and videos; can perform semester activities such as assignments, quizzes, discussions and online Labs.
  • VULMS can be accessed from the link; https://vulms.vu.edu.pk/

Lesson 3 : Introduction to VU

The Virtual University, Pakistan’s first University based completely on modern Information and Communication Technologies, was established by the Government as a public sector, not-for-profit institution with a clear mission: to provide extremely affordable world class education to aspiring students not only all over the country as well as all over the world. Using free-to-air satellite television broadcasts and the Internet, the Virtual University allows students to follow its rigorous programs regardless of their physical locations. It thus aims at alleviating the lack of capacity in the existing universities while simultaneously tackling the acute shortage of qualified professors in the country. By identifying the top Professors of the country, regardless of their institutional affiliations, and requesting them to develop and deliver hand-crafted courses, the Virtual University aims at providing the very best courses to not only its own students but also to students of all other universities in the country.

The university has brought the revolution in the field of education. VU is among the big universities of the country where more than 100000 students are getting education in different disciplines. Degree holders of this university are posted on good designations in national and international institutions. A number of such students are running their businesses in a better way. Revolutionary education system provides the students not only the quality education but also the skills to perform well in their professional career.

VU also provides the opportunity to students for extracurricular activities by organizing student week, photography competition and various societies etc. These activities help students to uplift their performances.

The Virtual University of Pakistan holds a Federal Charter, making its degrees recognized and accepted all over the country as well as overseas.

  1. Mode of Education in VU

The Virtual University uses a combination of video lectures, reading material, audio/video tutorials and on-line interaction (e-class rooms) for imparting knowledge. However, it follows a very formal assessment and evaluation system in the same fashion as used in any conventional higher education institution (HEI). Around 200 campuses of the University across Pakistan provide its students a great opportunity to participate in academic activities. Although, the University observes the semester system, its students have complete flexibility to study at their own convenience, pace and place.

VU campuses across the country provide its students a great opportunity to participate in academic activities without any extra burden on their pockets as compared with those studying at home. The wide spread of virtual campuses and complete flexibility to study at home jointly support the unique idea of “World Class Education at Your Doorstep” and in a true sense makes it unnecessary for students to relocate or travel to larger cities to obtain higher education.

The university's video lectures are developed by highly qualified faculty members or field experts in a complete digital environment and handcrafted at its own fully equipped recording studios. These lectures are then delivered through Virtual University's Learning Management System (VU-LMS) and its four free to air Television Channels (VTV1-4). Lectures are also made available over the Internet on YouTube, Dailymotion and the Virtual University's Open-Courseware site (http://ocw.vu.edu.pk). Although, the students can watch these video lectures at their own convenience, however the University suggests a “Time Plan” for guidance and better time management for studies during the semester. Students may also obtain the video lectures on DVDs from the University’s online bookshop.

  1. Student-teacher Interaction

Complete student-teacher interaction and support is provided through the VULMS while semester examinations are conducted in a formal, proctored environment at designated examination centers throughout the country.

  1.  What is semester system?

A semester system generally consists of two 16-week terms: one in the fall (followed by a winter break) and one in the spring (followed by a summer break). In annual system, exams are conducted after one educationalist year, while in semester system; exams are conducted after five or six months. Semester system includes assignments, Mid-term exam and Final-term exam that you will attempt to pass the semester. You will be given assignments and quizzes during whole semester that you will submit in specified deadline. All activities such as assignments and quizzes in VU will be announced at least one week before commencement.

Lesson 9 : Ethics of using Computers

As technology advances, computers and the Internet have an increasing impact on society. Studying computer ethics helps us to know what is good and bad act of using computers and how to deal with the computer properly without hurting other people. For more, let’s watch a video tutorial.

Content for Video:

  1. What is term "Ethics"?
  2. What is "Computer Ethics"?
  3. 10 Commandments by Computer Ethics Institute

  1. What is term "Ethics"?

  • Ethics deals with placing a "value" on acts according to whether they are "good" or "bad".
  • Every society has its rules about whether certain acts are ethical or not.
  • These rules have been established as a result of consensus in society and are often written into laws.

  1. What is "Computer Ethics"?

  • When computers first began to be used in society at large, the absence of ethical standards about their use and related issues caused some problems.
  • Today, many of these rules have been formulated as laws, either national or international.
  • Computer crimes and computer fraud are now common terms.
  • There are laws against them, and everyone is responsible for knowing what constitutes computer crime and computer fraud.

  1. 10 Commandments by Computer Ethics Institute

The 10 commandments of computer ethics have been defined by the Computer Ethics Institute. Here is our interpretation of them:

1. You shall not use a computer to harm other people:

  • It is unethical to harm people by making a bomb,
  • For example, it is equally bad to write a program that handles the timing of the bomb. Or, to put it more simply, if it is bad to steal and destroy other people’s books and notebooks, it is equally bad to access and destroy their files stored on computer.

2. You shall not interfere with other people’s computer work:

  • Computer viruses are small programs that disrupt other people’s computer work by destroying their files, taking huge amounts of computer time or memory, or by simply displaying annoying messages.
  • Generating and consciously spreading computer viruses are unethical.

3. You shall not snoop around in other people’s files:

  • Reading other people’s e-mail messages is as bad as opening and reading their letters: This is invading their privacy.
  • Obtaining other people’s non-public files should be judged the same way as breaking into their rooms and stealing their documents.

4. You shall not use a computer to steal:

  • Using a computer to break into the accounts of a company or a bank and transferring money should be judged the same way as robbery.
  • It is illegal and there are strict laws against it.

5. You shall not use a computer to bear false witness:

  • The Internet can spread untruth as fast as it can spread truth.
  • Putting out false "information" to the world is bad.
  • For instance, spreading false rumors about a person or false propaganda about historical events is wrong.

6. You shall not use or copy software for which you have not paid:

  • Software is an intellectual product.
  • In that way, it is like a book: Obtaining illegal copies of copyrighted software is as bad as photocopying a copyrighted book.
  • There are laws against both.

7. You shall not use other people's computer resources without authorization:

  • Multiuser systems use user ids and passwords to enforce their memory and time allocations, and to safeguard information.
  • You should not try to bypass this authorization system.

8. You shall not appropriate other people's intellectual output:

  • For example, the programs you write for the projects assigned to you in any course are your own intellectual output.
  • Copying somebody else’s program without proper authorization is software piracy and is unethical.
  • Intellectual property is a form of ownership, and may be protected by copyright laws.

9. You shall think about the social consequences of the program you write:

  • You have to think about computer issues in a more general social framework: Can the program you write be used in a way that is harmful to society?
  • For example, if you are working for an animation house, and are producing animated films for children, you are responsible for their contents. Do the animations include scenes that can be harmful to children?

10. You shall use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect:

  • Just like public buses or banks, people using computer communications systems may find themselves in situations where there is some form of queuing and you have to wait for your turn and generally be nice to other people in the environment.
  • The fact that you cannot see the people you are interacting with does not mean that you can be rude to them.

Use of Official Email Policy

To avoid un-authorized receipt or sending of email and its consequences accordingly, the email facility must be used with due care and as per official policy in this regard. You can read the official email policy by following these steps:

Step No.1: https://vulms.vu.edu.pk

Step No.2: Click “Notice Board”

Step No.3: Click “Official Email Policy for Students” link available under “Important Links and Notifications Section”.

Lesson 10 : Security Concerns at a Glance

In this era of Internet, it is critically important to understand that any information that you send electronically or place on a remote web-site (or even on a computer at a public place) may be accessed / damaged / misused by other individuals regardless of whether you allow them to do so or not.  There are so many security concerns associated with our computers and data. In this context, let’s take a brief glance on such security concerns /threats in this video.

Content for Video:

  1. What is Computer Security?
  2. What are security concerns /thefts associated with computer and data?
  3. Protective Guidelines

  1. What is Computer Security?

  • Protecting a computer system and data stored in it from being damaged or accessed by unauthorized persons is called computer security.

  1. Security Concerns/Thefts associated with computer and data:

Our computers can be accessed by un-authorized users in multiple ways. For example, if you don’t have set credentials (login and password) on your computer then any un-authorized person can easily use your computer and data. In other case, if you have set the credentials for your computer even then your credentials can be hacked/ stolen by some un-authorized person to get the access of your computer as well as your important data if you are not following proper guidelines in this regard. Furthermore, your computers can be accessed by un-authorized persons through Internet.

Data can loss or be damaged by computer viruses (computer programs written with intention to harm/damage/steal, transfer the data stored in our computers to some other computers or to occupy the system resources such as memory which in turns deteriorates the overall performance of the computer.  Such programs can take different forms and may enter into your system through different ways.

For example:

  • By downloading and installing pirated software on your computer through an un-trusted website / pirated CDs/DVDs.
  • By clicking on a link (available on an untrusted website or in the email from any untrusted /unknown sender) indicating:
    • Download / obtain gift, lottery, bonus, special offers.
    • To see your personal images.
    • To enter your bank account number, debit card / credit card numbers
    • To enter any other confidential information etc.
  • By copying data from an affected portable device such as USB to your computer.

  1. Protective Guidelines:

  • It seems a very difficult task to keep track of all the security threats/concerns which are known to us, and the new ones that just keep emerging. The best thing we can all do is to properly follow the related guidelines. Here are some simple tips/guidelines that you can use to protect yourself from security threats:

  1. Use of passwords:

    • Protect your computer and data with password. Using secure passwords is the most important way to prevent from un-authorized access. The more secure your passwords are, the harder it is for a hacker (un-authorized individual) to access your system.
    • Use a password that has at least eight characters and a combination of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols.
    • Use unique passwords for each account and keep changing them regularly.
    • Do not share your login and password information with anyone in any case.
  1. Downloading and installing software
    • Make sure to download software from trusted / recognized websites only.
    • Don’t use pirated software.
    • In case of copying data and installing software through portable device such as USB, always scan the device for viruses first.

  1.  Don't share Personal Information
    • Personal information can be used a number of ways by hackers and scammers.
    • Direct information like Social Security numbers or account numbers can be sold or used to access money or loans.
    • Even sharing small bits of information can come back to hurt you.

  1. Ignore spam:
    • Beware of email messages from unknown parties.
    • Don’t click on links or download files from unsolicited emails.
    • Don’t reply to emails asking you to update or verify account information.

  1. Back up:
    • You should always keep backup (multiple copies) of your data. The backup will be useful if a virus deletes your data or modifies it.
    • An external hard drive can also provide enough space for backups, so utilize it.

  1. Log-out:
    • Don’t let a web browser remember your passwords, and make sure to log-out of any accounts when you’re done.
    • Always log-out from online accounts, and sign-out the emails, especially when you are using public computers or public Wi-Fi.
    • Anyone can access your information if accounts or emails are not properly logged out.

  1. Sell Devices Safely:
    • When it’s time to move on from an old computer or phone, be sure to wipe personal information from it.
    • By clearing out a computer, you prevent the next user from misusing that data.

  1. Install antivirus software:
    • Antivirus is a kind of software used to prevent, scan, detect and delete viruses from a computer.
    • Install the latest antivirus software on your computer.
    • You should periodically update antivirus software because older versions of antivirus programs may not detect the new viruses.

  1. Use a firewall:
    • Firewall is software designed to create a barrier between your information and the outside world.
    • Make sure the firewall is enabled in your computer.

Lesson 11 : Scheduling the Study: Best Practices

Doing well on an exam involves preparation, which means developing a schedule so that you can study material timely rather than the night before an exam. How can students put all those effective strategies together to develop a coherent study plan? Make a study schedule!

Try to list down your daily activities along with approximate time required for each activity. This will help you in effectively managing your time. Let’s watch a video to learn more about it.

Content for Video:

  1. What is a Study Plan?
  2. Why do I need a Study Plan?
  3. Tips for creating a Study Plan

  1. What is a Study Plan?

  • A study plan is an organized schedule, outlining study times and learning goals.
  • Just like with work or school schedules, university students should develop a schedule that sets a dedicated time each week for studying.
  • This schedule should include dates of quizzes, tests, and exams, as well as deadlines for papers and projects.

  1. Why do I need a study plan?

  • A study plan is an effective way to help you navigate through your university education, and hold you accountable for your own learning outcomes.
  • Study plans are particularly important for online students, since you need to have self-discipline and determination to complete your studies without the constant reminders of an instructor.

  1. Tips for creating a Study Plan

Follow the guidelines given below to get started on creating your study plan:

1. Analyze your current study habits and learning style:

  • Think about what works and what doesn’t work for you.
  • Are you able to study for long blocks of time once or twice a week, or is it more effective if you study nightly for thirty minutes?
  • Are you more productive at a certain time of day?
  • Do you retain material better if you study a subject immediately after class, or do you need a break first?

2. Evaluate your current schedule and time management:

  • Use a digital or paper calendar to block out all of your standing commitments, including classes, work, and extracurricular activities. This will let you see how much of your time is already reserved for, and what time you have available for studying. For the ease of VU students in this regard, VU-LMS contains “Lecture Schedule” and “To Do Calendar” sections. The students may facilitate themselves using these sections while scheduling their study.
  • If your schedule leaves little room for studying, you may need to evaluate what you can cut back on, or how you can rearrange your schedule to have more open time for studying.

3. Plan how much time you need to study for each class:

  • For many years, the accepted rule has been that you need to study two hours for every one hour of class time, meaning that if you’re taking a typical 15-credit semester, you will spend 30 hours a week outside of class studying.
  • VU Students can know about the academic activities such as assignments, graded discussions, Viva voce, Midterm and Final Term Examinations through Index/Lesson section available at VU-LMS, where (for the ease of the students) these activities are mentioned with respect to the number of lessons after which these activities will be conducted.
  • You can use these as guide for calculating how much time to set aside for each class, as some courses might be more intensive than others. It will also help you schedule your study sessions to make sure you have enough time to complete all your academic activities and prepare for exams.

4. Develop a schedule:

  • Now, that you understand how much time you need for studying, and how much time you have available, you can schedule your study sessions.
  • Add your study sessions to your calendar like any other commitments. This ensures that you remember this is time set aside specifically for studying.
  • Plan out which subject you will study on which day, to ensure that you’re devoting enough time to each subject.
  • For example, Mondays and Thursdays can be set aside for Math, while Tuesdays and Fridays can be devoted to English.

5. Assess your weekly calendar:

  • Identifying your learning goals for each class will help you determine how much time you need to spend studying.
  • At the start of the term, think about what you want to accomplish in each class. Maybe you want to master a specific skill, or improve your grade. These are overarching goals to help motivate you during the term.
  • Then, at the beginning of each week, determine why you need to study and what you plan to accomplish in each study session.
  • Are you preparing for a big exam?
  • Is there a pending paper?
  • Are you able to read a chapter ahead in preparation for the next few classes?
  • Adjust your study plan as necessary to meet your weekly goals, and get the most out of each study session.

6. Stick to your schedule:

  • A study plan works best when it is followed consistently.
  • You should try to develop a study plan that you can follow for the length of each term.
  • You will have to adjust your plan as necessary when you switch your classes each term.
  • Remember, the most important thing is sticking to your plan.

Lesson 12 : Preparing Yourself for Examination: Best Practices

Mid and final term exams are among the most challenging aspects of the university experience. There is so much to learn, keep organized, and remember as you head into finals. Following video contains some effective preparing tips that can help reduce stress and increase your grade point average in exams.

Content for Video:

Studying and preparing is vital to success in exams. Here are some tips which will help you to both studies better, and perform better in the exams.

1. Start your revision early:

  • You need to give yourself enough time to review everything that you have studied, and make sure that you understand it (or to read round the subject or ask for help if you are struggling). You can take help / guidance from your course Instructor in this regard. Watch the video lectures; study the course handouts / notes and the recommended books. In case of confusion about any topic, concept or related matters such as exam syllabus, duration and pattern etc., you should consult with your course instructor through:
    • Moderated Discussion Board available on VU-LMS
    • Email at course email ID or at Instructor’s email ID.
    • Live session as per schedule provided to you by the course instructor.
  • Ideally, review each subject as you go, and make sure that you understand it fully as this will make revision much easier.

2. Organize your study time:

  • It is also helpful to consider when and how long you plan to spend studying each day.
  • How much time will you be able to manage each day?
  • Can you do more reading at particular times?
  • When is the best time of day for you (morning, afternoon or evening)?
  • This will help you to plan broadly what you intend to do, although you should always make sure that you leave it flexible enough to adapt later if circumstances change.

3. Look after yourself during study and exam time:

  • You will be able to work better if you eat a healthy diet, and get plenty of sleep.
  • This applies both during your exam period, and when you are revising.
  • Surviving on junk food is not a good idea.
  • It is also a good idea to take regular exercise when studying.
  • A brisk walk, or more vigorous exercise, will get your blood moving and ensure that you are better able to concentrate.

4. Vary your revision techniques:

  • It is said that variety is the spice of life, and it certainly helps to improve your studying.
  • Always doing the same thing.
  • For example, reading over your notes on a subject—is likely to be quite dull.
  • Spice up your revision period by trying different exercises and techniques.

5. Take regular breaks

  • You cannot work solidly for 8 hours.
  • In fact, it is very hard to work in a concentrated way for more than about an hour.
  • You may find that some days you can do more, but mostly, one to one and a half hours is likely to be your limit before you need a break.

6. Know your exam:

  • You should be well aware about your exams such as:
    • Exam Date Sheet (When your exams will start).
    • Exam Syllabus (How many lectures are included in your exam)
    • Exam / Paper Pattern such as types of questions (descriptive or multiple choice) and their ratio / portion of the types of questions in the exam
    • Duration of the exam
    • Exams rules and regulations

  • This will ensure that you are prepared for the type of exam you will be sitting, whether multiple choice, short answer or long.
  • Know what you are expected to do.
  • For example, how many questions from each section will you have to answer?
  • Make sure that you have practiced the right type of questions, and know what will be expected of a 'good' and 'bad' answer.
